STEAM Day at the Primary School
(Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math)

Students in Kindergarten and Grade 1 rotated through to each teacher to participate in an exciting STEM activity! Preschoolers invited parents to join in on the fun in the cafeteria!


Grade 1 activities included:


Math- Measuring the circumference of a pumpkin with different nonstandard units of measurement.

 Engineering- Read "The Legend of Spookily the Square Pumpkin" and then with straws and pipe cleaners work to create a pumpkin in the shape of a cube.

Science- The Oozing pumpkin!

Technology- Watch a "Life Cycle" video of pumpkins. Then using Tux paint the students will design their own life cycle and label the stages.




















Kindergarten activities included:

Fizzy Pumpkin Art
Sink or Float
Will my bridge support my pumpkin?
Pumpkin investigations- weight, circumference, etc.






























Preschool activities included:
*Fall number recognition:  roll a dice and cover
*Sort the leaves by colors and throw them into the correct pile (colored hula hoops)
*Create an Fall Masterpiece
*Fall Pattern Blocks use your reasoning skills to fill in the correct shapes
*Lego Trees (use the legos to create a fall tree)
*Reading Center and make a bookmark to take home
*Stack the pumpkins in the pumpkin patch (see how tall you can make them)
*Counting the leaves on trees (use a spinner and put the beads/leaves on the trees)
*Challenge roll and cover (roll two dice and add) cover the number!




















Music

Activity #1: Golden Corn

Students will learn the Golden Corn Song:

Students will also learn non-locomotor movements for this song.

Activity #2: Apple Tree Apple Tree

Students will learn “Apple Tree, Apple Tree”:

Students will also learn a circle game to play along with the song.

Activity #3: Hall of the Mountain King

Students will be told the story about Peer and the Mountain King. They will then act out parts of the story that coincide with Edvard Greig’s “In the Hall of the Mountain King” from the Peer Gynt Suite.



Physical Education

“Scarecrow” , which is a locomotor game that teaches concepts such as pathways, boundary lines, teamwork, and running speed variations.







Art

The Douglas High School Senior Class paid a visit to the Primary School Friday morning for their traditional Halloween costume parade. Thank you so much for sharing this with our students.
